Since 1807 exists in Izhevsk, 1100 kilometers in the east of Moscow, the factory Izhmash (Izhhevsk Engine Plant) which produces weapons for the Russian Army.
In 1942 by decree 622 of the Soviet committee for defense Izhmekh ("Izhevsky Mekhanichesky Zavod" IMZ: Izhevsk Mechanical Plant) was built as part of Izhmash. Izhmekh manufactured pistolsTula Tokarev TT-33 7.62x25 mm), revolvers (Nagant 7.62x39 mm), tank defense weapons (Simonov PTRS 14.5x114 mm) and guns. The construction of the Kalashnikov (AK-47) made them world famous since 1947.
Since 1963 these Russian weapons are international distributed under the brand Baikal. IMZ was and is co-owner of this brand. Furthermore the firm distributes products of the manufacturer
These, together with the commercial firm Vostok (weapons for sport and hunting), export under the name Raznaexport. Such federations were necessary under the communistic governance due to the limitations of the trading with capitalistic systems. Raznaexport support on the one hand the flow of foreign exchange, on the other hand detailed national control of the market.
With the fall of the communistic system, the marked gains in importance and this firm-construct became unnecessarily. Today the weapons are distributed under the brand Baikal.
